AUSTRIA: SAVINGS FROM INTERNET TICKET SALES
Article Abstract:
Austrian Airlines (AUA) estimates that savings of 20% can be achieved by selling tickets in the internet. Selling costs correspond to 22% of AUA's aviation turnover of about Sch 10bn annually. In the medium term the share should rise to 19%. Within five years, direct selling of tickets through electronic media should account for 15-20% of AUA's ticket sales, up from 1% at present, while travel agents handle 70% of AUA sales in Austria. From summer schedule 2000 AUA will be able to use the electronic booking systems of the Star Alliance.

EU-Kommission pr ft Billigtarife der AUA
Article Abstract:
Austrian Airlines has stopped special price fares on the Vienna-Brussels route that it granted initially to Austrian citizens and then to employees of the European Commission after Austria joined the European Union. The change of heart comes after the competition affairs department of the EC sent Austria an official enquiry about the fares. Austria's upcoming presidency of the EU is expected to boost demand for the flights.
