AUSTRIA: SONY BETTING ON DVD

Sony DADC Austria, which expects the world market for digital versatile discs (DVD) to grow from 22mn units to 78mn units per year, is spending Sch 1mn on 20 new production lines for the discs in by autumn 2000. In the financial year to 31 March 2000 Sony DADC Austria sold 486mn units of optical media, up 16% from 1998/99. Turnover grew 10% to Sch 4.5bn, to which music CDs contributed 45%. Balance sheet profit amounted to Sch 455mn. Sony DADC Austria and Sony Europe have set up the joint venture Sony NetServices, which offers individual internet solutions from web design to network solutions and software development.

Sony Austria, which produces CDs, CD-ROMs, play-station discs and DVD at factories in Anif and Thalgau, is spending about Sch 350mn on expanding production by 10% in autumn 1999 from 1.5mn units per day at present. In the fiscal year to 31 March 1999 Sony Austria increased production by 27% to 420mn units, of which 98% was exported. The company made a balance sheet profit Sch 450mn (up 11%) on a turnover of Sch 4.1bn (up 28%).

AUSTRIA: KEEN DEMAND FOR SONY DVD VIDEOS

Dieter Daum, chief executive of Austrian Anif-based Sony DADC and European production chief of Sony, expects the company's sales of DVD videos to reach 120mn units in year 2001, up from 80mn in 2000. Altogether the company sold 514mn CDs, CD-ROMs and DVDs in 2000, increasing turnover by 8.6% to EUR 352mn. Sony DADC has 12 production plants in Europe, Asia and Australia.
