FRANCE: NESTLE'S LIGHT SOUPS
Article Abstract:
The Nestle group has launched a line of light instant soups under the Sveltesse and Maggi names. The purpose of this launch is to stimulate the sector of instant soups and to compete with Bestfoods' Knorr and Fralib Unilever's Royco. There will be 1mn samples delivered to women who are the core target for the product, in beauty institutes, at hair dressers, and gym clubs. This line comes in Cream of Tomato with Basil, Milled 9 Vegetables and Chives, Milled Potato-Leek with Parsley and Creamy Green Vegetables with Chervil. They come in packs of four individual sachets. These soups claim the advantages containing no fat (60 calories per serving), containing fibre, and vitamins C, PP, B6, B2, B1, and B9. According to Nestle this new segment is expected to reach the volume of the ethnic soup segment of 3.5mn litres.

FRANCE: THE RICE MARKET HOLDS STEADY

Despite a FFr 79.1km advertising investment, the rice market rose only 1.5% in value from 1998 to FFr 1.4bn in 1999, while the volume held steady at 110,000 tonnes. By segments, long grain rice, which represents 97% of the value market share, posted a 2.2% rise in value, driven by whole rise, up 17.9%, 10-second quick cooking long grain rice, up 6.8%, and rice with a special taste, up 6.9%, while rise which cooks in 20 seconds dropped 8%. Round rice, which represents a 2.7% market share, dropped 8.9%. However, rise has enormous potential in France, since consumption comes to only 5.5 kilos per household and per year.

FRANCE: FERRERO LAUNCHES GRAINE DE SAVEURS

Ferro has launched Graine de Saveurs, a line of taboule and couscous in four varieties: Taboule a la Oriental, Taboule a la Provencale, Couscous aux Epices d'Orient, and Couscous Creole. Sachets of flavoured oils are included separately from the couscous sachets for better taste quality. The recommended sales price is about FFr 12.50 per unit. Ferrero is positioning itself on the buoyant speciality (whole grain, organic, flavoured) segment, up 16% in volume in the 12 months ending 19 December 1999.
