AUSTRIA: WEAK EURO UNDERMINES PURCHASING POWER
Article Abstract:
According to Josef Christl, chief economist of Creditanstalt, the benefits of the weak euro boosting the export demand are more than offset by the fall of purchasing power by Austrian consumers. Christl predicts the country's inflation rate in 2000 at 2.2%, and also the economic research institute Wifo has revised its forecast up from 2% to 2.25%. For 2001 Creditanstalt predicts an inflation rate of 1.7% and Wifo 1.8%. While Creditanstalt expects inflation to curb consumer spending, Wifo predicts that inflation will affect saving more than consumption.
