AUSTRIA: WINE QUALITY RULES EASED
Article Abstract:
In Austria's new wine law that was passed by the first chamber of the parliament, the rules for so-called quality wine were widened. From next year wines produced out of different vines and in different regions in Burgenland and Lower Austria may be mixed. The rules were eased for the producers from these regions to be able to supply wine to big retail groups. Billa, the supermarket chain controlled by Rewe of Germany, requires a minimum amount of 300,000 bottles per order. Until now only two (Neusiedl, Weinviertel) of Austria's 16 wine-growing regions have met this criterion. In the segment of so-called Landwein, vin ordinaire from Burgenland and Lower Austria may be equipped with the label Weinland Osterreich and those from the rest of Austria with the label Bergland. Der Standard of 23 July 1999, p.18, reports that in the next 5 years Austrian wine producers will get European Union subsidies of Sch 90mn. The money will be spent on conversion for more up-to-date types of vine and for increasing cultivation areas per producer.

AUSTRIA: CONTI TO CUT PRODUCTION AT SEMPERIT?
Article Abstract:
According to the Trend magazine, the production plans of Semperit Reifen for 2000 entail merely 1.4mn rather than 2.9mn tyres. It is said to be doubtful whether Semperit will be allowed to produce the 1.1mn tyres in the MMP technology, as originally planned. The works council of the subsidiary of German Continental fears the loss of 250-300 of the Austrian company's 1,800 jobs.
