Acer net rose 41% in quarter: share sales help buoy PC vendor's results; laptop recall in U.S

First-quarter net profit for Taiwan computer company Acer Inc. increased by 41% to $170.5 mil, driven in part by the selling of shares it holds in other firms. However, faulty lithium-ion batteries manufactured by Sony Corp. caused Acer to voluntarily recall 27,000 laptop computers.
