Action agenda: can Japan lead the way at the APEC summit?
Article Abstract:
Japan will host the annual Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum meeting in Osaka on Nov 19, 1995, but it threatens to devolve into a messy affair in sharp contrast to the two prior meetings. This year's summit is supposed to feature agreements on concrete steps toward the goals set in Bogor in 1994 and in pursuit of the vision laid out in Seattle in 1993. The sticking point is agriculture, with Japan in particular pleading for more time to phase in competition. However, talks among senior officials have eased the problem.

Talk of the town; Japan logs on to personal computers
Article Abstract:
Japan has finally begun to show interest in the computer boom that has swept the US, though it will lag for years to come in home penetration by PCs. Sales of PCs will jump from 3.4 million in 1994 to 5.5 million in 1995, and 1.2 million copies of Windows 95, with its Macintosh-like usability and appealing graphics, will be sold between its mid-Nov launch and year's end. Interest in the Internet gets much of the credit, but companies have begun to realize their managers are more effective with computers on their desks.

Getting personal
Article Abstract:
The Personal Handyphone System (PHS) has become popular in Japan where it is much cheaper than regular mobile phones. There were over 3.5 million subscribers for the system in Aug 1996. PHS does not have a wide enough range for businessmen who travel a lot, but is useful for young urban dwellers. Students account for 30% of subscribers, more than half of whom are less than 25 years old. Handsets are offered free or at a low cost if a subscription is taken out.
