Addicted to the arms trade
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom is a major arms exporter and a trade fair held in Surrey, England, in Sep 1999 attracted around 900 exhibitors. Weapons from the UK have been used by Indonesia in East Timor, and this has been an embarrassment to the UK government. Foreign secretary, Robin Cook, has pledged a more ethical focus on arms exports. Arms sales to Indonesia have been suspended, but this is unlikely to be a turning point. Revenue and high-tech jobs are benefits from the arms trade, and the government is aware of this.

Second coming: strategic defense
Article Abstract:
The Strategic Defense Initiative Organization (SDIO) is being officially disbanded, as the notion of a space-based system that could stop thousands of missiles is being replaced by a ground-based one that will stop a few. A new organization will take SDIO's place.
