After Hussein
Article Abstract:
Jordan appears stable after the death of King Hussein. There are other leaders in the Middle East who are ageing and instability in one country could affect its neighbors. The transfer of power in Palestine, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Syria could be difficult since clear succession plans have not been made, and there have been some levels of despotism in each country. The son of Hussein, Abdullah, takes over in Jordan, and he should seek to be a constitutional ruler.

Open economy, closed politics
Article Abstract:
Egypt has seen strong economic growth and the private sector has grown to some 70% of Egypt's gross domestic product, but there have been social stresses as a result of economic reform. The government increased the power of the police through emergency laws in the 1990s in order to tackle these stresses and Islamic insurgency. There is public opposition to a law on non-governmental organizations which is part of a wider move for greater political freedom.

The warning from the Nile
Article Abstract:
The stagnant sameness of Middle East politics contrasts nicely with what is happening in the Balkans, but the situation remains very dangerous. There is little outsiders can do without inside cooperation, which makes Egypt's inability to help so troubling.
