After the flood: Indonesia criticised by bankers for poorly implemented debtstrategy
Article Abstract:
Indonesia's stringent adoption of a debt strategy and worsening international credit conditions have combined to stem offshore borrowing by Indonesia's public and private sector. This control on borrowing has helped ease the diminished Indonesian current account, reaffirm Indonesia'scredibility in the international financial community and delayed infrastructureprojects. The debt strategy Indonesia was resolutely arrived at in Sep 1991 with Presidential Decree 39. The decree has been widely accepted although therehave been some misgivings regarding its implementation.

Flamboyant Japanese heads unusual band
Article Abstract:
Kioshi Shikata is a former Japanese businessman and entrepreneur who has rebelled against Japan's rigid social conventions to the extent of starting his own big band, The Thrill, in 1990. This musical group has prospered by giving Western musical styles an offbeat Japanese twist combined with Shikita's attention-getting stage behavior. In May 1993, Shikita followed up this success by starting a new periodical, New Cultural Edge, intended for the 16 to 25 year old group. Shikata's ambition is to change his career every five years.

Collateral damage
Article Abstract:
The Thai government's bloody suppression of demonstrations has tarnished the country's image among foreign investors, tourists and bankers. The banking system was affected as short-term money market rates increased to 11 % and auction markets were hit as the value of the Stock Exchange of Thailand index went down by 8.9%. Bank funding for the country's infrastructure needs are expected to become more expensive while the flow of private investments are likely to halt altogether.
