No longer the sheltered life
Article Abstract:
A new insurance business law effective from FY 1995 will introduce deregulation and increased competition into the Japanese insurance industry. Japan's 27 life assurance and 25 general insurance companies will have to maintain temporary 'solvency margins' till 1995, when they will be given capital-adequacy ratios. Insurers may, therefore, prefer to invest in government or corporate bonds and lend to big banks to take care of bad debts. Insurers also face competition for savings-type insurance products, and will have to declare their non-performance loans at the end of FY 1993.

High marks for Asia: World Bank presents its annual report card
Article Abstract:
The World Bank revealed in its yearly report that Eastern Asia andLatin America are registering impressive economic growth. The report attributed Eastern Asia's rising economy to effective handling of international trade developments and the enhancement of commercial exchanges among the countries that comprise the region. On the other hand, Southern Asia posted sluggish growth due in part to the political turmoil in the Soviet Union. India, a Southern Asian country, is one of the top borrowers of the World Bank in terms of total overdue loans.
