The Mexican economy is showing strong signs of recovering from its horrendous 1995 recession, but Wall Street is taking a careful approach to this sudden prosperity. Mexican banks are still short of capital, which makes them reluctant to lend and thus inhibits a complete economic recovery.

Mexico is reaping the benefits of one of the most dramatic economic turnarounds in recent history. Increased privatization and free trade have brought inflation and the budget deficit way down. History indicates however that such success may be difficult to maintain.

The Mexican media is being privatized, which will seriously impact the highly profitable Televisa. The broadcaster of Spanish-language programming has long held 95% of the domestic market and is making strong inroads into the US broadcasting market.
