The British insurance industry has been through several very bad years, but the latest indicators show it might be finally starting to rebound. Part of the reason is a new emphasis on the fundamentals of the industry, such as underwriting and claims handling.

When the wind blows: reinsurance
Article Abstract:
The unusually large number of natural disasters in 1992 have driven up premiums for various types of reinsurance. Reinsurers have developed more sophisticated ways of evaluating and controlling risk. They are also growing in size to diversify their risk.

Many of the government regulations of the insurance industry are counterproductive and should be discontinued so that individual companies are subject to the same economic forces as those in any other industry. Tax policy is especially misguided.
