Ageing warriors
Article Abstract:
Some Tibetan exiles in India question the Dalai Lama's leadership of efforts to focus international attention on China's oppressive rule in Tibet. The Amnye Machen Institute, organized by young Tibetan intellectuals, is prominent in this dissident movement. Lhasang Tsering, who helps to lead the institute, believes that active resistance against the Chinese will be more effective than the Dalai Lama's non-violent strategy. The abrupt end of US support for Tibetan guerrillas in 1972 proved to Tsering that only self-interest will persuade the great powers to back Tibetan independence.

Diaspora dreams: eyes fixed on Tibet, exiles in India flourish
Article Abstract:
Tibetans who left their native land for India after Chinese forces invaded Tibet in 1952 have prospered economically, culturally and politically. These 125,000 exiles have enriched themselves and their host country mainly through farming and trading. Their emphasis on education has reflected a desire to prepare children for modern life while protecting Tibetan culture, language and religion. The exiles and their leader, the Dalai Lama, have also succeeded in preventing the world community from forgetting about China's oppression of Tibet.

Educating Tashi
Article Abstract:
Tibetan children are escaping from oppressive Chinese rule in their native country to seek an education among India's community of exiled Tibetans. Rising numbers of such children are braving the arduous journey across the Himalayas, with 327 having made the trip in 1992 and 231 as of May 1993. Tibetan parents allow their children to go so they can escape discrimination by the Chinese and learn Tibetan language and culture freely.
