The ruling Tory Party has gone to great lengths to prepare its 1997 election manifesto, but this effort is largely wasted, since the UK electorate pays little heed to party manifestos. John Major and his Conservative Party might benefit from abandoning the practice of publishing election-eve manifestos.

A conservative at last

UK prime minister John Major has taken conservative beliefs in his bid for reelection. He is attempting to reassure voters that his leadership, and that of the Conservative Party, is best for Great Britain's stability. Major's previous governments are known for their radical thoughts.
