Agency may face Mr. Gloom: Sakaiya could shake up optimistic atmosphere
Article Abstract:
Japanese economic analyst and critic Taichi Sakaiya has been selected by newly-elected Japanese premier Keizo Obuchi to head the Economic Planning Agency (EPA). The agency is headed for a heated relationship with Sakaiya, a harsh critic of Japanese economic planners and the agency during Sakaiya's tenure as an author and critic. The EPA is known for its optimistic projections on the Japanese economy, reluctantly refusing to concede to Japan's economic woes. Sakaiya is expected to bring the EPA to new heights of economic reporting, with accuracy as his goal.

Japan's restaurant stocks dish out appetizing prospects after food scare
Article Abstract:
Analysts encourage investors to buy stocks in Japanese restaurant companies as stock prices which went into depression during the outbreak of food poisoning are expected to rise now that the food poisoning issue is over. The epidemic, which was traced to a bacterium called E. coli O157 that was detected in ingredients for preparing school lunches in the city of Sakai, caused a 5%-12% decline in restaurant stock prices. To boost prices and attract investors, many restaurants have invested on computer systems that store consumer information.
