Alcatel posts drop of 42% in profit: Lucent net is flat

Alcatel S.A., the French telecommunications equipment company which is acquiring rival U.S. firm Lucent Technologies Inc., is reporting a third-quarter net profit loss of 42%, while Lucent's net profits were flat. This gives credence to the reasoning behind t he acquisition, which is expected to save the companies $1.7 billion in t hree years.
