Alcatel to cut 12,000 workers in U.S., Europe; warns of profit-margin shortfall

Alcatel SA announced that it is reducing its labor force in the US and Europe by an additional 12,000 workers. This number constitutes 10% of the French telecommunication-equipment firm's labor force. Alcatel also said that its telecommunications division's operating profit margins could be lower than what it previously forecast. For the 1998 year, Alcatel posted 2.34 billion euros ($2.56 billion) in net profits.
