Alcoa's earnings rise 19% in quarter on cost cuts, aluminum price rise

Alcoa Inc. posted an improvement of 19% in its earnings for the third-quarter of 1999. The company's figures were helped by ongoing cost-reduction strategies and by the increasing price of aluminum. Alcoa posted $259.1 million (241.1 million euros) in net income for the period. During the same period in 1998, the world's largest manufacturer of aluminum posted $217.7 million in net income.
