Alitalia swings to a slim profit

Alitalia Linee Aeree Italiane S.p.A. of Italy posted a net profit in the third quarter of 5 million Euros compared with a net loss of 46 million Euros a year earlier. Ryanair Holdings PLC of Ireland posted a second quarter 17 percent net profit rise of 172.5 million Euros compared with 148.1 million Euros a year earlier. European airlines appear to be pulling out of a downturn.

Fuel costs dropped 1.5%, but personnel expenses rose 14%. Airline officials stated the firm has sufficient cash reserves to continue flying for at least a year while a buyer is sought.
