Allianz's quiet coup d'etat
Article Abstract:
The German insurance company Allianz, the seventh largest insurer in the world, has expanded internationally through acquisitions of insurance companies in the US, France, Italy, and Spain. The firm, which controls 16% of the German life insurance market, recently purchased 100% of Fireman's Fund in the US, the 15th largest insurance company in the world, and 51% of the former East German insurance monopoly. Some critics feel that the $3.3 billion that Allianz paid for Fireman's Fund was too high, but the firm is confident that Fireman's will be profitable despite a US recession and a consumer rebellion against insurance companies. Chmn Wolfgang Schieren is the architect of the expansion, and has built up the company into one of the major financial conglomerates in Europe in the last 20 years.
