Alsop's fables
Article Abstract:
Many ordinary people in the UK have achieved a high level of personal empowerment through new technology, 24-hour services and other trends. This development clashes with the risk- and imagination-averse attitude of middle managers in large companies. Ordinary people are seeking to question and challenge, while middle managers want certainty and control. In architecture, this situation has been reflected in buildings which are over-managed and over-didactic. Architecture must be regarded as a provocative agent to encourage individual expression, and an excessively programmatic approach to architecture must be avoided.
