The European Community (EC) in the early post-Cold War era is experiencing a pause in the movement toward political union, as nationalist sentiments now hold sway on the continent. The power of the EC can be expected to increase as the 1990's decade passes and the single European market gains acceptance.

Weighty matters for Europe's Union

European Union officials who are working to revise the Maastricht treaty are considering a proposal to give countries with larger populations more weight than smaller ones. Currently small countries such as Ireland and Luxembourg have the same veto power as larg ones such as Germany.
