The European Commission is having to scale back its plans because its member nations are growing increasingly nationalistic and insisting on greater independence. It remains to be seen whether the Commission will ever be able to exert the same authority it has in the past.

The EC shares certain features in common with the now defunct Comecon, but it is not as coercive, centrally planned, introverted, or inflexible as Comecon was. The EC's institutions and system of government should be reformed to account for Europe's economic diversity.

The victory of the Maastricht treaty in a Danish election is providing new momentum to the European federation movement. In some ways the Maastricht treaty is not as viable now as it was when it was first developed, but its collapse now could be disastrous.
