Amazon net falls; revenue rises 20%

Amazon.com Inc. of the United States first quarter profit decreased 35 percent to $51 million from $78 million a year earlier. Profits were affected by an accounting change from last year. Revenues were up 20 percent to $2.28 billion from $1.9 billion due to growth in global business interests.

Fiscal first-half net profit for Japan's Softbank Corp. more than tripled to reach $405.7 mil, driven primarily by the mobile communications business it acquired from Vodafone Group PLC in 2006. The business accounts for nearly 60% of Softbank's revenue and operating profit.
