Admart is a home shopping company set up in Hong Kong, which has pushed down prices and has cut costs on retail space, but is still making a loss. The habit of shopping for pleasure is strng in Hong Kong, and stores offer home delivery. Admart has set up small stores to deal with this problem. The company has become a wholesaler since it is selling to small stores and offers them lower prices than local wholesalers for some products. The company was set up by Jimmy Lai, who has lost retail advertizers for his newspaper as a result of his new venture.

There is competition in online retailing in Europe between US companies which have a greater understanding of the Internet, and European companies which have a greater understanding of the European market. Bertelsmann has launched an online book retailer called BOL, while Amazon is entering the European market, where it is expanding cautiously. Amazon's software appears easier to use than that of BOL, and delivery of a sample purchase was faster.
