Delivering the beef
Article Abstract:
The new chief executive of Barclays Bank, Matt Barrett, faces challenges, some of which result from the bank's attempt to move into investment banking. The bank's stock price has not performed well, though it reported a pre-tax profit of 4 billion US dollars for 1999, representing a return on equity of 21%. Barrett foresees companies adapting to the internet or ceasing to exist, and is sceptical about the fashion for internet companies. Barclays is to increase the number of internet customers in Britain, focusing on credit cards, mortgages, and other old-fashioned products.

Fall guy
Article Abstract:
Citigroup's Jamie Dimon was seen as likely to replace the joint head of the company, Sandy Weill, but Dimon has left the company. The news was followed by a drop in Citigroup's stock price. The company has also been affected by the defeat of candidate for New York senator, Alfonse D'Amato, which makes new banking laws unlikely, so Citigroup may be forced to sell its Travelers insurance business. The loss of Jamie Dimon means that there is no clear heir to replace Weill.
