America goes bust
Article Abstract:
Personal bankruptcies have increased in the US despite the health of the economy, and this has led to concern about bankruptcy laws. These laws treat distressed borrowers more kindly than they are treated in many other countries. Debtors have to disclose assets, and are unable to file for bankruptcy for some years, so there are penalties involved for debtors. Debtors tend to have low incomes in 1997, compared to the 1980s and 1970s, and the increased willingness of companies to offer credit appears to have caused the rise in bankruptcies.
