American accents: Japan is rushing to adopt the free market, which means there's a new role model in Tokyo: the United States
Article Abstract:
American practices are in vogue throughout Japan, even in the highest levels of business and government. The Japanese market has become more open to foreign businesses, and even the model for financial reform is a Western one. The rush to adopt American-style changes dates back to the collapse of Japan's asset bubble in the 1990s, and Japanese managers looked to the difficult restructuring steps taken by American companies. Prime Minister Hashimoto appears to be a Japanese traditionalist, but the model for his policies is O-Bei, a Japanese word meaning literally Europe and America.

Down to the wire
Article Abstract:
The Japanese government is considering measures to prevent the Nikkei stock average falling to a dangerously low level at the end of the fiscal year on Mar 31 1998. The average was below 17,000 on Mar 11. A figure slightly below this level would bring disaster to the Japanese financial system. The Daiwa Bank, for example, would have losses of 110 billion yen if the average fell to 16,000 on Mar 31. The government is allegedly considering a 10 trillion yen plan to boost investor confidence and also considering allowing the postal-saving system to invest funds in the stockmarket.
