Amsterdam real estate market is booming
Article Abstract:
Rents are rising and office space is getting even more scarce in the booming commercial property market in the Dutch capital of Amsterdam. Since July 1997, the city's prime office rents have increased 25%, making Amsterdam one of the best performing real estate locations in Europe. Brokers predict rates to continue expanding at a doubled-digit pace over the next two to three years. The tightening property market is attributed to a favorable tax regime, robust Dutch economy, consolidation in the banking, legal and accounting industries and abundance of skilled, multilingual employees.

Ahold cancels purchase of Pathmark
Article Abstract:
Ahold N.V. dropped its $1.75 billion acquisition of Pathmark Stores Inc., citing "strong opposition" from U.S. regulatory authorities to the deal. Pathmart's owner, Supermarkets General Holdings Corp., accused Ahold of breeching the contract it signed in March. Ahold's decision to abandon the Pathmark acquisition leaves it weakened at a time when it is struggling to catch up with Wal Mart Stores Inc. and Carrefour SA in the global race for size among food retailers.
