An ill-judged amnesty
Article Abstract:
There has been criticism of a Turkish amnesty bill which will free several thousand common criminals while leaving political prisoners still locked up. There are around 10,000 political prisoners in Turkey, and most of them are Kurds, with some Islamic militants. There will be pardons for those who attack other Turks, but not for those who attack the Turkish state. Prime minister, Bulent Ecevit, faces an attack on his reputation which follows criticism of the government's slow response in dealing with the earthquake of summer 1999.
