UK pharmaceutical firm GlaxoSmithKline PLC has hired consultants outside the firm to evaluate leadership qualities of its internal candidates for the chief executive officer position. Candidates are European pharmaceuticals president Andrew Witty, US pharmaceuticals president Chris Viehbacher, and global pharmaceuticals operations president David Stout. The selection process is being discussed with shareholders, and Jean-Pierre Garnier is giving each of them specific tasks to assess their skills.

Chief Executive Officer Philip Purcell of Morgan Stanley of the United States has resigned and the company may be planning to divest one or more of its business units. Mr. Purcell was the champion of the financial "supermarket" banking approach that has since fallen into disfavour with Wall Street. Morgan Stanley's shares are down 12 percent since 2004 and closed yesterday at $50.88 on the New York Stock Exchange.

Liz Claiborne names pharmaceutical executive as CEO
