Jerzy Buzek, doughty but adrift
Article Abstract:
Polish prime minister, Jerzy Buzek, has been described as honest, diligen, and often seen as too nice to survive in politics, yet he has proved to be a survivor. He was selected as a compromise candidate in 1997 for being reliable and a conciliator. He had previously taught chemistry and had been a leader in the labor union, Solidarity. The government's popularity has dropped, as has Buzek's, despite the strong performance of the economy, and this is linked to social reforms being carried out by the government.

Renouncing heaven's mandate
Article Abstract:
There is a need for political reform in South Korea, if economic reform is to succeed. This should tackle manipulation and bullying, and reduce levels of corruption and bureaucratic interference. Too much power is concentrated in the presidency and this is one reason why the parliament of South Korea is not performing well. Political parties lack strength and supporters of parties expect gifts in return for support at rallies, which can prove to be expensive.
