The British Telecom acquisition of MCI may be the largest transatlantic merger ever, but it does signify a revolution in the industry. The UK and US giants had been partners in a global corporate-telecom joint venture since 1993. The takeover was mostly to prevent anyone else from buying MCI.

The merger of Bell Atlantic and Nynex will create the second largest telecommunications company in the US, with a $50 billion market value. The deal may have a hard time being approved by regulators though, as there are concerns that it may restrict competition.
