And you, General?
Article Abstract:
Bolivia's president is General Hugo Banzer Suarez, and he was a military ruler during the 1970s, though has since been elected. There were 16 governments from 1964 to 1983, and generals were encouraged by the US to overthrow governments since this was seen as a move against communism. There is evidence of swaps of prisoners between Bolivia and Chile, and there have been calls for an investigation. Supporters of Banzer argue that he brought stability to Bolivia, and he has sought to re-establish democracy since he had to stand down in 1978.

The odd couple: Bolivia
Article Abstract:
Banzer and his running mate seem like an unlikely pair of candidates. Banzer was Bolivia's dictator in the 1970s, and Zamora is a former Maoist revolutionary who was driven into exile during that decade by Banzer. The two are running on a platform of efficient government.
