Chia, the Dalai, and talk of a deal
Article Abstract:
The Dalai Lama was forced to flee Tibet in 1959 when he was aged 24-years-old and there is still official opposition to his return, but there are signs that he could be invited back. Many nuns and monks and other nationalists from Tibet are in jail, and the monasteries have become less important. Tibet presents a problem for Chinese foreign relations, and Tibetan nationalism persists, despite repression and Chinese immigration. Tibet could be allowed to preserve its culture and religion in exchange for accepting Chinese political rule.

Blood in the snow
Article Abstract:
Tibet has been presented as a center of enlightenment, and China as representing evil, but Chinese-Tibetan relations are more complex than might first appear. China initially respected Tibetan customs, but this changed after the 1959 uprising and the departure of the Dalai Lama. China's attitude has also changed since 1996, though it is still brutal, and Tibet's religious uniqueness is denied. Change is only likely to occur with a change in China's attitude, argues Tsering Shakya, a Tibetan educated in the west.
