Ando's couture concrete: Restrained yet revolutionary
Article Abstract:
Tadao Ando has been influenced by western architecture, but his work retains a Japanese character. He is best known for his use of concrete in a recognisably Japanese manner. However he does not follow traditional plan forms, and his design for the Lotus Pond Hall of Honpukuji ignored convention. His use of exposed shuttering provides a link with the traditional architecture of Japanese homes, and the level of restraint in his work is the essence of Japanese style.
