Angry Telecom staff strike back
Article Abstract:
Hongkong Telecom staff will not work overtime in protest to the company's decision to cut their wage by 10% from November. The decision will affect about 13,800 workers. The Hong Kong Telephone Staff Association plans staff gathering after 6 p.m. on 21 September, outside Telecom House in Wan Chai. The association said the company could only save HK$300 mn from the cut. If they had discussion before, they could offer other alternatives to generate the HK$300 mn. Louis Loong, Telecom director of corporate affairs hoped their staff would not take industrial action. Problems could be solved via communications. He also added they had contingency plan if situation got worse. *

270 HK Telecom workers sacked
Article Abstract:
Hongkong Telecom Employees Union chairman Cheng Chun-man said it was unnecessary for Hongkong Telecom to lay off its staff when it was making profit and staff had been overworked. Employees believe a second round of layoffs could come in September. However, Luk Hon-tak a spokesman of Hongkong Telecom said the company had to prepare for the challenge ahead as market was changing. Thus, the layoffs were not unfair even though the company will record a profit of more than HK$11 bn for 1998. *
