C&W gains 31 global clients from Telecom
Article Abstract:
Hongkong Telecom has agreed to transfer 31 global client service contracts to Cable & Wireless Global Market. CWGM will offer global telecom service management. In return, Hongkong Telecom will become C&W's sole service supplier in Hong Kong and Asia. Hongkong Telecom is expected to save HK$47 mn a year from this arrangement. For the year to March 1997, it paid HK$110 mn to C&W on global telecom service. Market believes this will help maintaining Hongkong Telecom's competitiveness in global telecom service market where more and more multinational companies are using one-stop service. *

Telecom to sack 1,000 staff: union

Hongkong Telecom Employees Union said Hongkong Telecom would lay off more than 1,000 staff. The first batch of 400 staff were expected to receive notices on 27 July. Most of the staff to be involved would be senior and managerial staff. Besides, staff working in network operations, such as maintenance, installation and planning, will be affected most seriously. Industrial analysts said Hongkong Telecom was prepared to lay off 30% of its 14,500 staff. *

Telecom pegs back pay rises

According to Hongkong Telecom Employees Union, Hongkong Telecom's general and support service staff will receive pay rise of 4% in 1998. Managerial and professional staff will receive pay rise of 3%. In 1997, the pay rise was 6.5% in average. Besides, the company is planning to cancel special allowances and limit overtime work. The company spokesman could not confirm the claims and said the new deal had not yet been discussed with staff. *
