Anti-millennium bug campaign
Article Abstract:
Hong Kong will launch a campaign to increase the concern among local computer users about the problem of Y2K millennium bug. When 1999 becomes 2000, most computers will turn their two-digit internal clocks back to 00, leading to conflicts with date-dependent programs. Industry source says 70% of businesses are not aware of the problem. The Industry Department has offered HK$70,000 in fund for the development of millennium bug awareness. Campaign will include an educational video and CD-rom that will explain to small to medium-sized business the nature of Y2K millennium bug. Basically, the problem consists of three levels. The first one is non-compliant computer chips. People have to check with manufacturers if they need to replace the chips. The second area is the software. People with old programs such as Office 4.5 or Windows 3.1 have to check with the software computers if their software is compliant. The third is the most difficult on which is the administration aspect. In large networks of hundreds of computers, all computers have to be checked. *

Most HK computers bug-free
Article Abstract:
An expert said the Y2K millennium bug should not be a big problem to Hong Kong because most computer systems in Hong Kong were set up after the demise of the two-digit year system, the report says. A professor of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology said the concern is driven by vendors who want to sell computers by using fear, uncertainty and doubt. However, those affected by the computer problem should change to new systems as soon as possible. As the report says, the only major companies to have invested in technology in 1960s were Hongkong Bank, Hang Seng Bank, China Light and Power and Hongkong Telecom. They expect to improve the systems by the end of 1998. *
