Arabs tiptoe to democracy
Article Abstract:
There has been a move toward democracy in some Arab countries where elections are becomeing freer and women are being permitted to vote. There are 22 Arab states which have tended not to be liberal, but this is gradually changing. Presidential elections are to be held in Tunisia and Yemen, while the new king in Morocco has expressed support for human rights. There are even rumors that a political party is to be launched in Egypt. Satellite TV is one way in which information monopolies can be broken.

The arguments that won't wash
Article Abstract:
Objections to worldwide extension of Swiss-style direct democracy claiming the Swiss are a special case, or decision-making is more efficient when done by specialists, or that politics is a science best handled by experts, are facetious. Money can corrupt the referendum, but no more than representative democracy.
