Argentina's economy: nearly time to tango

Argentina is finally taking the right measures to cut skyrocketing inflation and public debt. Under the guidance of President Carols Menem and economy minister Domingo Cavallo, inflation has slowed, the gross national product is rising, and interest rates have dropped.

Argentina's lopsided recovery
Article Abstract:
Argentina was badly hurt by Mexico's currency collapse in 1994-95. However Pres Carlos Menem's 'convertibility' plan and other economic reforms have invigorated Argentina's economy. Economic growth is expected to hit 5% in 1997, but unemployment is still high, at 17%.

Argentina after Cavallo: an economics minister goes, the problems don't

Argentine Pres Carlos Menem was re-elected, but he dismissed Cavallo, who served the country well for five years with his bold policies. Cavallo made numerous market reforms that will still be kept in place, despite the resulting recession.
