British Airways in Argentina: into the fire?
Article Abstract:
The Falkland Islands War and the subsequent freeze in relations between the UK and Argentina ended direct commercial flights by UK airlines to Argentina. British Airways (BA) negotiated an arrangement with the Argentine national airline Aerolineas Argentinas in which they offered complementary service in order to gain back business lost to other airlines. BA did business in Argentina without being able to advertise and sell tickets due to restrictions placed on the airline by the Argentine government. BA sold tickets through other airlines and promoted its flights through joint time tables with Aerolineas. The new government of President Carlos Saul Menem has improved relations with the UK and BA is now allowed to fly to Buenos Aires. BA succeeded in maintaining a presence in Argentina by being patient, by deemphasizing the fact that they were a British company, and by not discussing the disputed Falkland Islands.

Argentina's privatization aspirations
Article Abstract:
The plans of Argentine Pres Carlos Saul Menem to privatize 40 state firms are being delayed by poor planning, bureaucratic roadblocks, and opposition from unions. Some observers believe that the new government lacks both the expertise and the political support to mount an effective privatization campaign. The imminent privatization of Entel, the telecommunications conglomerate with $1 billion in annual sales and 46,000 employees, will be the key to the the country's economic recovery by signalling progress towards the implementation of a successful privatization program. Other targets for future privatization include Aerolineas Argentinas, the railroads, and oil leases. The government needs to speed up the pace of privatization if the program is to have a chance at turning around Argentina's economy.

As Bunge y Born goes, so does Argentina
Article Abstract:
The administration of Argentinian President Carlos Saul Menem, a Peronist, has adopted an economic plan developed by Argentina's largest multinational company, Bunge y Born (B&B). Menem has adopted the B&B plan, which is based on an econometric model developed by US Nobel Prize-winning economist Lawrence Klein. The adoption of the plan offers Menem international credibility as a display of his economic pragmatism, while it offers B&B economic advantages by favoring the agriculture and agro-industry sectors that dominate the company's economic empire. Symbolic of the company's influence, a B&B vice-president, Nestor Rapanelli, was appointed Menem's economic minister.
