Arms and the man
Article Abstract:
The US appears to associate firearms with liberty, yet an examination of US history shows that this link is relatively modern. Only some 11% of the population owned guns in Massachusetts up to 1840, and militias were not well armed or especially skilled. Guns started to be owned by the mass of the people as a result of the Civil War. This led to an increase in the production of weapons. Murder rates rose sharply after the war, and guns were used as murder weapons.
