Army's blame game: military tries to block political consequences
Article Abstract:
A military whitewash of the tragic but cold-blooded shooting of peaceful Thaidemonstrators on May 18 1992 is feared. Military accounts of the tragedy differ widely from media and eyewitness accounts. They tell of abusive demonstrators trained and manipulated by communist subversives who provoked the patience of some soldiers. According to the stories, demonstrators incited the soldiers by carrying Molotov bombs. The military top brass is being shielded from blame over the bloodbath since the stories deny that it was they who ordered the soldiers to fire upon the demonstrators.

Brief encounters: political row over bid to merge legal profession
Article Abstract:
The Law Society in Hong Kong has proposed on Jan 12, 1993 that the two groups of legal professions namely the Bar Assn representing barristers and the Law Society representing out-of-court solicitors be merged. Observers noted that the timing of the proposal with the current dispute between China and Britain over the constitutional reforms proposed by Hong Kong Gov Chris Patten is surprising. They fear the implicationthat the fusion of the two might only motivate Peking to change both the legal profession and the judicial system after 1997.

Smoke signals
Article Abstract:
China and India are hesitantly strengthening military relations to promote mutual cooperation though not necessarily to form military alliances. The increase in Chinese and Indian military maneuvers in Asia necessitates a Sino-Indian military dialogue. India is also keen to improve relations with China because of the strengthening of Sino-Burmese naval cooperation.
