Article Abstract:
Steve McGuckin is the co-ordination architect for the new Channel Tunnel terminal at Waterloo, London, England. McGuckin is the link between the architects, Nicholas Grimshaw and Partners, and the construction team. He has qualifications in business administration and project management as well as architecture and experience of large, fast-track projects. McGuckin takes pride in his management skills and ability to deal with design problems as work progresses. He believes architects place too much importance on aesthetics and ignore management and practical skills.

Old ideas about steel structures go up in flames
Article Abstract:
Multi-storey steel framed structures may be able to withstand fire better than has been thought. Evidence from fires in steel frame buildings like Broadgate, London, England shows that the steel structure did not fail although individual members were seriously damaged. The Building Research Establishment is to test a full size steel framed building and believes the results will change building and fire protection regulations, saving up to 30 million pounds sterling annually. Present regulations are based on tests of single steel beams.

Tender-list charges could put squeeze on architects
Article Abstract:
Architects and other construction industry firms face the prospect of paying high fees to be included in pre-qualification lists. The requirement stems from an European directive which comes into force in Jan 1993, obliging transport, water and energy organisations to keep lists of approved suppliers for work over a certain value. The National Joint Consultative Committee for Building objects to the practice and claims small firms will suffer from having to pay high fees for the convenience of the purchaser.
