As bad as it gets?
Article Abstract:
The world economy faces a Japanese recession, a slowdown in China, economic decline in a number of Asian economies, a drop in value for the Russian ruble, and Latin America could be affected. World gross domestic product may grow by less than 2% in 1998. Events in the US economy will have an impact on the world economy, and a stock price crash in the US would follow a period when investors have seen stocks as safe. There have been calls for a cut in US interest rates. US stocks have not fallen far enough to merit such a cut, though the US should be aware of the impact its policies have on economies elsewhere.

Once upon a time in Wall Street
Article Abstract:
US stock prices have risen following a drop in US interest rates, but there are still problems in world financial markets. Stock prices have risen in Europe and Asia. The US is increasing its contribution to the International Monetary Fund, and a plan for banking reform has been approved in Japan. There are optimistic signs, but there are still serious economic problems in Asia, the US could be hit by a credit crunch, and US stock prices are overvalued. A stock price correction cannot be prevented by central banks' interest rate policies.
