The United States economy has shifted from a manufacturing economy to a service economy, often choking social mobility as service positions are not as high paying as manufacturing jobs once were. Moving from the underclass into the middle class is more difficult to achieve although retraining and education programs are making a difference.

Search for Fed Chairman widens

The United States Federal Reserve Board is looking for an economist to replace Alan Greenspan who is retiring in January 2006. The search has gone beyond the three popular candidates, Martin Feldstein, Glenn Hubbard and Ben Bernanke to include former Federal Reserve Board governor Lawrence Lindsey.
