Case against closing down
Article Abstract:
Closing stock markets for a day after the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington did not prevent those stock markets from experiencing sharp losses when they did reopen. Although a halt to trading is intended to give traders some time to reflect on a situation and so not react purely emotionally to a crisis, but some observers say that closing a market merely adds to the panic. Some observers say that when markets close, they do more long-term damage than they prevent in the short run, because investors will stay away from markets that they think might not be accessible in times of crisis.
