Asian crisis cushioned blow of quarterly drop in demand

Less demand for retail and commercial space has caused real estate markets in the Asia-Pacific area to decline, but the construction slowdown of the Asian financial crisis has somewhat softened the falling values. Rental prices for offices in Singapore dipped 2.8% in the second quarter, but Tokyo prices rose 2.1%.

Six skyscrapers that are taller than the World Trade Center are being planned in Asia. Taiwan is to build two skyscrapers with 100+ floors and Korea is planning the LotteWorld tower. Large buildings also are being planned for Hong Kong and China.

Some Asian real-estate markets are beginning to improve after experiencing a downfall due to the economic crisis that battered the region. Hong Kong and Singapore are the first to lower real estate prices and rents. Aside from strengthening Asian currencies, other factors that contributed to the improvement are the rising stock markets and lower interest rates.
